How can I become a Christian?
Becoming a Christian means getting right with God.
For us to get right with God, we need to understand that God is Holy and Just and we fall well below God’s standard.
We fall below God’s standard because we do things wrong and God needs to judge the things we do wrong in order for us to get right before him.
As you read the Bible you read of being saved and having Salvation, becoming a Christian is to be saved.
So the question how do I become a Christian requires four further questions to answer it:
So…
What do I need to be saved from?
We need to be saved from the wrath/punishment of God
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
ROMANS 1:18
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
JOHN 3:36
Why do I need to be saved?
At the beginning of time, God created the world and it was perfect
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
GENESIS 1:31
It’s not long after God created the world that mankind disobeyed God and sin came in.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
ROMANS 5:12
As you read the Bible, you will see a difference between God and mankind. Mankind sin and do wrong and fall short of God’s standard. God is perfect.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God
ROMANS 3:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
ROMANS 6:23
And so we see that the Bible says and reminds us that mankind sin and fall short of God’s standard, the result of this is that mankind are classed as sinners God will judge mankind with an eternal death.
Why do i need to be saved? we need to be saved from God’s judgment which is eternal death
Why can I be saved?
Just like when you do wrong in the world, there are consequences and punishment. God needs to punish sin. Mankind is due the wrath/punishment of God because of their sin, but mankind can be saved from God’s wrath and punishment if their sin has been dealt with. However, unlike in this world, where it is highly unlikely that someone else would offer to take your punishment when you do wrong, God’s Son, the Lord Jesus offered, and took the punishment that mankind deserved for their sin.
To take the punishment, the Lord Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice to God, the picture being of an animal being offered, killed and burnt as a sacrifice to God.
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
JOHN 1:29
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
HEBREWS 9:28
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
1 PETER 4:24
So mankind can be saved from God’s punishment because His Son has already taken the punishment for sin.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
JOHN 3:16
How can I be saved?
Being saved is as easy as ABCD:
A – Accept that you are a sinner:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
ROMANS 3:23
The first point to being saved is to realize that in the sight of God, who is holy and just, you have sinned and come short of His glory – His standard.
B – Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ:
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.
ACTS 16:31
Second, is to believe that the Lord Jesus took your punishment for sins when He died on the cross and that it is only through Him and His death and sacrifice that we can be saved.
C – Confess your sins
If we confess our sins, he (God) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 JOHN 1:9
Third, we need to confess to God that we are sorry for our sins and that we believe that His Son, the Lord Jesus has paid the price for our sins by taking the punishment.
D – Determine to live a new life for God
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
JOHN 3:3
And lastly, having acknowledged that we are a sinner, that God’s Son has taken the punishment for our sins, we have confessed to God we are a sinner, we determine to live a new life for God. We are born again. Our old life without God is gone and a new life with God is now in place.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
JOHN 3:16
